Snow Day

Jan 17th, 2018 - What a snowy day it was today.  My kids were very excited to miss school and play in the snow, as I'm sure most kids were.  It is noon and I have already had to dry my little boy's clothing two times.  He is out in the snow with some friends, for another round, as I write.  I wanted to tell all the students who were able to complete both the written Alcatraz essay, along with the Alcatraz project, congratulations.  And for everyone else please keep trying to meet the goals I have put in front of you.  As we learn to achieve goals in class it will carry to all aspects of our lives.  From my experience a success is a success, whether it is meeting a classroom deadline or climbing Mount Everest.  I want each of the students in my class to learn to succeed at meeting the goals that have been placed in front of them.  I have learned over time that confidence is built by achieving goals.  Lets do this.  Lets do this.  I believe in all of you now it's time for you to believe in yourself.  Mr. Banish

Bing Altruistic
Altruism is a very powerful word.  It is when one is concerned for the welfare of others.  It is when a person or a group of people look past their individual or group interest to unconditionally help others.  I was at Lowes yesterday and a man walked up and helped me load some oversized wood into my truck.  He saw me struggling with my kid and the wood and came up and said could you use some help.  I said, "I sure could."  We loaded the big pieces of sub flooring, into the back of my truck and the man took my buggy back to the store.  I thanked him for helping and watched him walk away.  That was a total altruistic act of kindness.  The man wanted nothing in return, though I"m sure he will receive many things because of his altruistic actions.  The old idiom, "What goes around comes around," applies to being altruistic.  If you are always looking to help others then others will help you.  Sounds like a perfect world doesn't it?  Just something to think on.  What the entire Jaguar team did last week, by raising money for people less unfortunate than us, was a type of altruism.  Together ,in only three days, we were able to raise 420 dollars for Rowan Helping Ministries.  They will really be able to help people with this money.  Please continue to practice altruism in all you do.  Holding the door for someone, picking up a dropped item,  smiling at a person while they are walking down the hall, and yes, donating money to a cause you believe in are all forms of altruism.  I challenge each of you to be altruistic. I challenge youth be great.

Being positive is not always easy in todays world.  We get so caught up in the mediated, (TV/computer,) world around us that sometimes we loose track of what is important in life.  For instance it is very important to be happy for what we have rather than be unhappy for what we don't have.  I see this so much of this in today's word.  Kids talking about Bugattis and Lambos and not realizing the value of a dollar in everyday life. Watching shows that glorify materialism rather than teach realistic expectations.   I don't ever remember even thinking about cars like that when I was a kid. Of course you rarely saw pictures of Lamborghinis and had no idea what a Bugatti was.  Besides that you knew that it was something that kids could not afford.  I know life is very technology driven today and there is no way around it if you want to be apart of society but how could we maybe not let it control our daily lives?  Think about this and let me know your ideas.  Some ideas are:

Read a Book.
Ride a Bike.
Exersize.
Take a walk.
Have a conversation with no electronics around.
Draw/Paint a picture.
Write in a journal.
Meditate or Pray.
Write a book.

Give me some more ideas.  Let's learn to appreciate our lives and excel at being who we are.

Just like that February is gone.  Deep Breath, Spring is here.

I am so excited we are heading into our last quarter of school.  We have all worked hard and are ready to reap the rewards of our hard work.  I hope everyone  received enough rest over spring break.  It is time to put forth your best effort and finish strong in ELA , as well as in all of your classes.  You are one step closer to becoming a seventh grader.  How exciting is that?
